Shaker Village Craft Fair September yearling sale begins Sept. 12 Keeneland's 73rd annual September yearling sale, the world's largest and most important Thoroughbred auction, begins Sept. 12. Thousands of buyers from around the globe will travel to Keeneland to acquire the best of North America's yearling crop. In 2015, a total of 2,745 horses sold for $281,496,100, the highest gross since 2011. The top sellers were two colts by Tapit consigned by Gainesway, agent, and sold for $2.1 million and $1.65 million. Major buyers from some 50 countries and nearly every state attend the September sale, which is globally acknowledged as the measure of the state of the Thoroughbred industry. Keeneland September sale graduates had won 67 graded stakes through May 16, 2016, led by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist.
